CAL-3 was inspired by a painting of the same name by German painter, Heiner Riepl. The composer and artist were both Fellows at Djerassi Artist Residency in Woodside, CA in Summer, 2009. Clearfield asked Riepl if she might “borrow” the painting to write music to it, informed by her synesthesia (seeing colors to music and hearing music to colors). The resulting work was created for dancers in residence, Debby Kajiyama & Jose Navarrete, who performed it with the composer at the piano and the painting on display, at Djerassi on July 31, 2009.
